It may be good for the soul, but an Indian orthopedic surgeon issued an interesting warning about yoga. According to the Indian doctor, yoga is dangerous for the knees.

According to a report by Ntvmsnbc, Ashok Rajagopal, the head of the Bone and Joint Institute at Medanta, The Medcity hospital in India, warned that some yoga poses like vajrasana could damage the knee joint and potentially necessitate a total knee replacement.

Rajagopal said many yoga gurus have had knee surgeries due to the pain they suffer. Rajagopal's warnings challenge yoga, which has become a multi-billion dollar industry.

The US spends billions of dollars on yoga every year. 15 million US citizens practice yoga regularly.

Rajagopal, who has encountered many patients suffering from knee pain and diseases seen in yoga practitioners, warned that yoga could damage the foot joints and lead to arthritis.

Rajagopal said, "Many yoga gurus have had knee replacement surgeries with us due to this excessive wear and tear." Explaining that when yoga movements like vajrasana are performed, the knee frequently needs to be stretched and bent, which dislocates the knees, Rajagopal stated: "When deep stretches are performed, the cartilage is under pressure, which is why the knee joints wear out and eventually knee arthritis emerges."
